Charged EVs | Mersen’s new fuses protect high-performance energy storage systems - Charged EVs
Posted December 9, 2021 by Tom Spendlove & filed under Newswire, The Tech.
Mersen has launched two new families of fuses for protecting battery racks and banks, battery containers and inverters. The GBAT and ABAT product lines were developed specifically for 1,000-1,500 VDC applications.
The ABAT15 fuses were developed for 1,500 VDC applications for battery rack and section protection. The fuses can withstand high load changes and low power losses, improving system reliability and efficiency. ABAT15A can quench fault currents up to three times the rated current. ABAT15C and D protect against large short circuits that typically come from energy storage systems. The fuses have current ratings from 500 A up to 1,600 A, and the fuses have been tested up to 250 kA.
The GBAT fuse series was developed to protect the line when the DC-DC converter is not next to the storage or battery systems. These fuses provide protection throughout the entire ampere range, from small surge currents to DC fault currents up to 150 kA. The series includes different ratings in 1,000 VDC and 1,500 VDC, with several sizes. They are available with bolt-on blades for direct mounting, or with plain blades.
Both the ABAT product line and the GBAT fuse series conform to the new draft of the IEC 60269-7 standard for battery protection, which calls for fuses to shut off the current quickly in the event of a short circuit.
